What is Parkinson’s Disease?
Parkinson’s disease is a neurodegenerative brain disorder that develops slowly but will last a lifetime. It is a progressive chronic disease, so its symptoms will only get worse without some type of intervention. Parkinson’s is an autoimmune disease that affects the basal ganglia and substantia nigra of the brain. Your own immune system is attacking itself. This progressive disorder of the nervous system typically affects movement.
Parkinson’s disease develops gradually, sometimes starting with a barely noticeable tremor in just one hand. But while a tremor may be the most well-known sign of Parkinson’s disease, the disorder also commonly causes stiffness or slowing of movement.
