What are common symptoms of hypothyroidism?
“Some common symptoms of hypothyroidism,” Dr. Goodbinder says, “include lack of energy and ability to lose weight, sleep issues when you wake up every couple hours, you haven’t had a bowel movement in a while… Maybe your hair is falling out or you get some depression”. The symptoms of hypothyroidism can be serious and have a major impact on your life; it can really affect the way you live.
You may be experiencing all of this, despite doctor tests coming back and saying that everything is okay. This can lead doctors to think your problems do not come from your thyroid because they are not running the right tests. Once you run the right tests and pinpoint the root cause, then you can begin to properly address the symptoms being caused by hypothyroidism.
How do you test for hypothyroidism?
“Testing for hypothyroid is one of the least well-done things that I’ve ever seen within the healthcare and medical community,” says Dr. Goodbinder. Typically, medical professionals test for things like thyroid stimulating hormone but that is not an efficient test and does not identify the root cause or issue of the thyroid problem.
We test for way more, looking at the different hormones that are produced, or not produced. We then see how those hormones are converted in the liver and gut. This tells us if the medicines and hormones are activating and converting properly, or inefficiently, and how the hormones estrogen and testosterone are affected.
Another important piece of information we are able to gather is whether the symptoms are being caused by an autoimmune problem. The entire spectrum of tests we conduct is absolutely important so we can get the whole story, not just a part of it.
