I’m really moody and depressed. Can this be a symptom of low thyroid?
Answer: It could be.
Depression, mood swings – They are some of the most common symptoms I hear when someone comes into my office with hypothyroidism or thyroid abnormalities.
Why is moodiness and depression a common symptom of low thyroid?
Anytime your body is under any stress, whether it be from an organ dysfunction, hormonal abnormalities, toxic overload, deficiencies in nutrients – it puts your body into stress. I know if I’m under stress, I’m much more likely to get irritated with someone or upset with someone in general. With low thyroid, it just so happens that there are a lot of receptors on your brain that are craving thyroid hormone. If they are not getting that hormone, it’s going to create problems in your body, which can lead to stress.
Could the stress be from something else?
The moodiness and depression could also be caused from non-biochemical and physiological stressors. I’m not saying I’m ever going to be able to take away your emotional tendencies on your stressors. We all have emotional stress. I don’t know what yours is, and you don’t know what mine is. However, if I can take care of your biochemical and physiological stressors, the emotional ones don’t seem so bad anymore.
