How Your Gut Microbiome Influences Whole-Body Health

Your gut does much more than digest food. The trillions of microorganisms that make up your gut microbiome help process nutrients and produce compounds that may influence inflammation, metabolism, immune function, and other systems throughout the body.

Some gut bacteria help metabolize tryptophan, an essential amino acid found in many protein-rich foods. Researchers are studying how bacteria such as Clostridium sporogenes and certain Bifidobacterium species produce tryptophan metabolites, including indole-3-propionic acid and indole-3-lactic acid.

Dietary fiber also helps shape the gut environment. Hemicellulose—one type of fiber found in plant foods—can be found in whole grains, legumes, fruits, vegetables, nuts, and seeds. Eating a varied, fiber-rich diet can help support a diverse gut microbiome and overall digestive health.

“Alzheimer’s, kidney disease, diabetes, and heart disease can all be significantly improved and potentially reversed with one bacteria that should populate your gut. It’s called clostridium spora genes. There’s a fiber called hemicellulose that specifically will feed that clostridium spora genes and also improve your bifido and change the way you break down your tryptophan when you ingest it. Tryptophan ingested inappropriately without good bacteria will create something called indole sulfate that’s highly toxic to your liver, brain, and heart. But if you have enough clostridium spora genes, if you have enough bifidobacter, you won’t make the bad guys. You will only make the good guys called indole-3-propionic acid or indole-3-lactic acid, both of which are incredibly anti-inflammatory.”

Lifestyle Tip: Eat a Wider Variety of Fiber-Rich Foods

Support your gut bacteria by eating a variety of plant-based foods.  Whole grains, beans, lentils, vegetables, fruits, nuts, and seeds provide different forms of dietary fiber. Try adding one fiber-rich food to a meal you already enjoy. Increase your fiber intake gradually and drink enough water as your diet changes.
