Can Birth Control Pills Affect My Thyroid?

Can Birth Control Pills Affect My Thyroid?

“I’m not a medical doctor, I don’t tell people to get off their medications. However, medications are processed through your liver. Your liver is integral to activating your thyroid hormone. And, if you are constantly putting exogenous or synthetic hormones through your liver, it has to process it.

If you have a hormone imbalance, you are not going to realize that your body is actually turning up a warning light. If you’re taking birth control to regulate your hormonal system, clearly there is an imbalance. And when you have imbalanced hormones your thyroid may not work right either.”

Can I take birth control at the same time as thyroid medication?

It is not recommended that you take pill form birth control at the same time as your thyroid medication as they both create hormonal changes in the body. You can take them at separate times during the day, just not at the same time.

Thyroid medication and birth control (oral estrogen) both utilize the same protein that is used as a binding agent in the blood. It is this commonality that can disrupt proper absorption of your thyroid medication.

Calcium and Iron supplements and thyroid medication

Additionally, calcium and iron supplements can have a negative impact on thyroid medication if taken simultaneously. Calcium and iron can both prevent the absorption of your thyroid medication.

If you are taking these supplements, it is recommended that you give at least 2-4 hours of time between each other and your thyroid medication.
