How does functional medicine approach hypothyroidism?

Traditional medicine prefers to look at hypothyroidism as your thyroid isn’t producing enough hormones; they then often just give you that hormone, instead of addressing why the thyroid isn’t making it itself. Regular medicine usually operates in a sense that if you are missing something, they just give you that something you are missing, rather than fix it. “There isn’t a ‘why?’. There is not a ‘how can we fix this?’” says Dr. Goodbinder.

This is different than the approach at The Epigenetics Healing Center. Our goal is to figure why, and how do we fix this. For example, if your T4 is down, is it an iodine deficiency? Is it an I-tyrosine deficiency? Or is it that your liver and gut aren’t working correctly to convert your thyroid right? “It’s very uncommon for your thyroid just to stop working” continues Dr. Goodbinder. “You really want to look at the whole picture so you can understand why”. This will allow you to make the appropriate decisions to start fixing it.
